Around the House and Garden

July brings us into summer with a flurry of holiday festivities, but it is the little things happening around my house and garden that mean summer has arrived.

We are enjoying simple, candlelight meals on our patio.

And, there are signs of patriotism both inside and out.

My corner perennial garden is thriving and starting to bloom. It's hard to believe this corner was previously the home of my daughter's trampoline. I have nurtured it the past few years; planting new perennials each season and it's starting to look the way I envisioned.

Even my clematis has rewarded me with a bloom or two this month.

Annuals add a bright splash of color here and there. I recently planted some marigold in a spot where a hoard of insects ate their way through some coneflower plants. I've read that marigolds repel insects with their strong scent - another gardening experiment :-)

My sister gave me some sweet pea from her garden and it is planted near a tree and slowly winding its way up a metal trellis. The booms are so delicate and sweet.

Right on schedule, at the beginning of July, my precious daisies are blooming. Soon I will be out in the early morning, with coffee in hand, cutting pretty bouquets for my kitchen.

Have a fun, festive and happy 4th of July weekend!

Painting Wrought Iron Patio Chairs

What to do when a perfectly good set of wrought iron patio chairs begin to show signs of rust? My furniture painting skills are not the best, nor do I really enjoy it, but I was successful at painting my patio table and chairs last summer, so I decided to give it a try again.

First, I used a wire brush to remove as much rust as possible and smooth out the surfaces. I then wiped each chair down with a damp towel to give myself as clean a painting surface as possible. The paint I used was very easy to work with and was a product with a metallic finish, in Chestnut. It sprayed easily, with great coverage and only required one coat, with a few touch ups here and there. Even with time for drying between touch ups, this project only took a few hours from start to finish.

I am very happy with the metallic paint finish on the chairs and they look great with my existing cushions. These four comfortable chairs surround our outdoor fireplace and with the cool nights predicted this weekend, will be put to use right away. Another outdoor project off my list - time to relax and enjoy my back yard the rest of the summer :-)

Happy Wednesday!

Red, White and Blue Sangria

This drink looked so fun and festive for the 4th of July, which is the main reason that I originally pinned it. Then, the pin began to be repinned over and over and became one of my most popular pins. I just had to try it myself, because all those pinners couldn't be wrong!

The original recipe was for a pitcher of Sangria, but since yesterday was my birthday and I love having a birthday near the 4th of July, I decided to reconfigure the ingredients and make myself a birthday cocktail to enjoy on my patio, late in the afternoon. After a little trial and error, I think I got the recipe right.

This drink was light, fruity and really delicious. The citrus vodka is a nice addition and compliments the white wine perfectly. Whether made by the pitcher, or by using this recipe for one, this would be a festive and refreshing cocktail to serve on any hot summer day.

Red White and Blue Sangria (for one)

In a medium glass, add 3/4 cup white wine (any variety, but I used Chardonnay), 1/2 cup lemon lime Perrier, 1/2 cup cranberry juice and 1 ounce citrus vodka. Stir well. Add ice, then top with sliced strawberries and blueberries. Enjoy!

Happy Tuesday!
