Chocolate Chip Pretzel Cookies

Who doesn't love a good chocolate chip cookie? And, this recipe gives a new sweet, salty twist to the classic cookie with the addition of broken pretzel pieces. I took these to my last tailgate and they disappeared from the plate before the day was even half over.

With so many having peanut allergies, using pretzels instead of adding nuts in the cookie dough is a great way to give plain, old chocolate chip cookies some interest. This is a pretty classic chocolate chip cookie recipe and in fact you could even use your favorite family recipe and just add in 2 cups of crushed pretzels. Sometimes it is the simple ideas that are the best :-)

Chocolate Chip Pretzel Cookies

2 cups flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup brown sugar

2/4 cup granulated sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 1/2 cups chocolate chips

2 cups broken pretzels

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugars, with a hand mixer. Add in eggs and vanilla and mix well, scraping the sides of the bowl. Add 1/2 flour mixture; mix well, then add rest. Stir in chocolate chips and pretzels. Using a cookie scoop or a tablespoon drop dough onto a baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes. Place on baking rack to cool. Enjoy!

Monday Morning Musings

On a cold, gloomy Monday morning it is always best to start the day with something fresh from the oven. Today, I used an overripe banana to make a boxed banana bread mix more flavorful. The candle on my kitchen counter is lit this morning and I am chasing the gloom away with coffee in my favorite mug and a warm slice of banana bread with butter.

The cold weather was the story of our tailgate this weekend, but we didn't let it keep us from having a great day. We still got there early, put up our tents in case it rained and had a great time, even though a little chilly. As you can see, I was bundled up in my winter coat, gloves and wrapped in a stadium blanket to stay warm. We had chili on a camp stove, keeping it hot and one of our friends was making made to order grilled cheese sandwiches. During the game that evening there was a misty rain falling to add to the dreariness, but we stayed warm cheering for an MSU win over Nebraska. When you have season tickets you prepare for the elements and don't let a little cold and rain stop your fun :-)

Last week, my friends and I got together to finish watching the first half of the Outlander season. We were only going to watch two episodes, but were so enthralled, we decided to watch the final three. As I have mentioned before, I am a big fan of the Outlander book series and as often the case with any adaptation, you wonder if it can bring the book to life, accurately. The television series has far exceeded my expectations and the actors have become the characters in the book, with inspired acting. The script has stayed very true to the book and if scenes are added, the story quickly makes its way back, even using the beautiful dialogue spoken in the book, in many places. The wedding episode couldn't have been more perfect.

Happy Monday!

Colorful Mums - Fall Gardening

The weather is going to take a turn for the worse this weekend and the leaves are starting to briskly fall from the trees in my backyard, next to the woods. That means it is time for a fall garden cleanup and the addition of color by adding seasonal mums. It is a balancing act to wait as long as possible and buy as good of quality as possible, with more buds than flowers, so they will still be blooming into November.

This group of smaller mum plants I placed in my fire pit turned planter will bloom for a long time, since the buds outnumber the flowers and also, the cooler weather coming, will help them flourish.

A perfect and brightly colored red maple leaf fell so perfectly and landed on this pretty orange, gold mum. We will be dealing with the over abundance of falling leaves from now to Thanksgiving, but I can still appreciate the beauty of that single perfect leaf.

My front porch display also got a pretty mum placed in a green bushel basket. The orange and gold tones give a nice pop of color to the display and contrast beautifully with the chevron patterned burlap ribbon, I casually tied on the big grapevine wreath propped in the back.

Happy fall gardening and have a wonderful fall weekend!
