A Grown Up Daughter

No one really tells you how much fun it is having a grown up daughter. It's my daughter Megan's 26th birthday today and how I wish I could be with her to celebrate. When your daughter turns 26, you don't have to worry about planning the perfect party, goodie bags or keeping over excited children occupied. It's as simple as spending time together, maybe over a glass of wine, buying some pretty presents and indulging in a slice of cake. It's about the conversation; grown up conversation, where you discuss the important things in life and what another year might bring.

I enjoyed every year when my daughters were growing up, but there was so much business in the day to day and year to year; always striving for the next milestone, that the quiet times had a tendency to get lost. When we spend time together now, it is intentional and we make the most of being together. Having an empty nest can be hard and spending birthdays apart is never easy, but knowing that the beautiful, happy young woman I raised is making her way in the world is all I can ask for. We may be miles apart on her birthday today, but I so look forward to her next visit, a belated celebration and spending time with my grown up daughter.

  1. Happy 26th to your daughter! What you've said is so true. My daughter is 29 now and while I feel sentimental about the past I appreciate where we're at now in life. :-)

  9. Happy Birthday, Megan!! What a lovely young woman she is!

Grown-up birthdays are fun! My daughter and I each celebrate our birthdays at the end of February, so I spent yesterday with her at a spa and then lunch, wandering around downtown Toronto together. It is great to catch up, make plans for the coming months and reflect on the time passed. This has quickly become a favourite tradition.

  13. She is lovely. My only child and only daughter just turned 28 and getting married in less than 60 days andit amazes me sometimes how she is truly my best friend. There is no one I would rather sit and have a glass of wine with or do a little shopping or even plan a wedding. I comsider myself very lucky, as I know you must also.

  15. Happy Birthday to your sweet girl. shes beautiful! Mine is 24. She found a job away from our home town after college and moved out on her own (with a roommate). She still expects a family dinner for he birthday but leaves all the parties up to her friends. I miss her so much even though she visits at least once a week. Her room here is always waiting. Daughters are the best !
