Painting Wrought Iron Patio Chairs

What to do when a perfectly good set of wrought iron patio chairs begin to show signs of rust? My furniture painting skills are not the best, nor do I really enjoy it, but I was successful at painting my patio table and chairs last summer, so I decided to give it a try again.

First, I used a wire brush to remove as much rust as possible and smooth out the surfaces. I then wiped each chair down with a damp towel to give myself as clean a painting surface as possible. The paint I used was very easy to work with and was a product with a metallic finish, in Chestnut. It sprayed easily, with great coverage and only required one coat, with a few touch ups here and there. Even with time for drying between touch ups, this project only took a few hours from start to finish.

I am very happy with the metallic paint finish on the chairs and they look great with my existing cushions. These four comfortable chairs surround our outdoor fireplace and with the cool nights predicted this weekend, will be put to use right away. Another outdoor project off my list - time to relax and enjoy my back yard the rest of the summer :-)

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I have used this paint in the past and loved it too! I just finished painting my wrought iron patio set too, but now getting ready to pack it up again when we moved. Not sure if I should have waited for the move. Oh well, I am enjoying it now on the patio. Have a wonderful week!

  8. Your furniture looks great!!! I used a Rust-Oleum spray paint for patio furniture a few years ago and they still look great. I am definetly sold on anything that holds up in our NC humidity. I have a problem with patio furniture cushions getting mildewed - I wish there was a spray for that!
