Tablecloths for every occasion can be expensive, so I have come up with a trick when I need something unique to go on my table when I entertain. Whenever I am at the fabric store, I make sure and look at their remnant or mistake cutting table and look for the larger pieces to see if there are any pretty patterns that would work for a tablecloth - usually 2 to 3 yards. This size works perfectly on a smaller round or square outside table for casual entertaining. Or, it would work for a dining table with the leaves out.
This pretty pattern is one of my favorite finds, because it goes perfectly with my special pink depression glass, for a casual breakfast place setting. I don't bother finishing the edges with my sewing machine and just use my sharp sewing scissors to clean things up and make sure all the edges are straight.
The next time you are at the fabric store, take a look at the remnant table and think about setting a pretty table. You will be surprised at the larger pieces available and the variety of patterns. The possibilities are endless :-)

ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I am space challenged so to have too many tablecloths becomes a problem, but I might be able to squeeze one or two if the price was right. I love your depression glass. I have a couple bowls, but it is becoming so pricey that it is being priced out of my range.

ReplyDeleteMy sister-in-law does this for tablecloths and table runners. I'm going to give it a try. My dining table is extra wide so it is really tough (and EXPENSIVE) to find tablecloths for it.

ReplyDeleteThat's exactly where I get my tablecloths too. That way if you only use it once or twice a year, you don't feel as guilty. And the added bonus is that you get way more selection this way.

ReplyDeleteAt times our local thrift store has some good fabric pieces so I grab them when I can. Got two yards of a floral yesterday. The flowers are pretty big so I'm going to do some embroidery on edges of flowers to dress it up somewhat or maybe sew beads around edges of flowers. I don't have a dining table but can use fabric to make decorative embroidery hoop art and maybe a pretty table runner . It's a nice weight fabric also so making a table runner or pillow cover would work.

Great idea . . . I used to make tablecloths and give as gifts. My favorites are from a neutral wool like woven material . . . I fringe the edges and then pull a couple threads an inch from the edge for a fancier finished look. It has been a loooonng time since I have made one. My mother was my teacher . . . Thanks for stirring me up . . . it gives me thoughts for a winter project
