Thoughts for Thursday...summer, books, etc.

  • This was my view at lunch one day last weekend. Melissa and I decided to sit outside on the deck, at this restaurant on the lake very near us. One of the very best things about summer, is dining outside. You feel like you are miles away from home, at a vacation spot, rather than a five minute drive.

  • Another favorite summer spot is Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. We went to the game last night and it was very fun. The crazy weather cooperated and it was a perfect, beautiful, breezy summer night for a baseball game. Pictures tomorrow :-)
  • My latest summer read that I found interesting is The Astronaut Wives Club, by Lily Koppel. I didn't realize the fascination America had with these women and their constant exposure through Life magazine. The author has compared them to the first reality stars, similar to the Kardashians. Their every hairstyle, outfit and even their shade of lipstick was scrutinized by the public. They started out as ordinary military wives and became celebrities. Their experience, told through interviews and the detail of the space flights was fascinating. I can still remember watching the moon landing as a child, gathered around a small black and white television.

  • I am very excited about a trip to New York City that is happening very soon. I have not been to Manhattan since my daughters were babies and I can't wait to spend some time there. My question for you is - what are some great restaurants or things I should see? Great boutique shopping areas? Many of you either live near, or travel there often, so your experience would be welcome.

Happy Thursday!

  1. Looks like a great place for lunch, seemingly away from it all but still nearby. Enjoy your trip to NYC. I was there once, and it was a shock to a girl from the hills of NW Wisconsin. What I remember most was that people were in a rush and unhappy, intense, and rude. Hope you have a much better experience. :-)

  2. If I were going to New York I would want to see Kinky Boots . . . (bet tickets are pricey!). It has been ages since I have been to NYC. I like Letterman so I might make a try for his show. So much to see and do. I hope people suggest some great restaurants for you. Have a fabulous trip!

  4. Have fun in NYC! I went a couple of times a few years ago and had such a great time. I went with a friend to visit her daughter who was going to school in Manhattan. She took us to all kinds of local "hot" spots and I've no idea how to tell you where they were.

  5. Such a beautiful spot to have lunch. Anything near water is always so relaxing. Have a great time in NY. I havn't been there for years either, maybe that should go on the list of places to go.

Thanks also for the visit and your gracious comment. I love cooking from the garden, it is so fun to see all the fresh veggies come in, and try to figure out what to make with them. Hugs, Marty

  8. Happy anniversary on one year of blogging. I have only been to the airport in New York. Joe and CC go there and I stay behind as I do not like cities. It does sound fun though. Those two just went to Ikea in Atlanta and bought some things for me as I am such a weanie. xo, olive

  13. My favourite tourist restaurant in NY is Tavern on the Green right in Central Park. It's pricey, touristy and kitschy. But the food is amazing, the service impeccable and the surroundings fantastic. While you're up there, make sure you spend some time in Central Park - it's gorgeous any time of year, but fantastic in the summer.

Make sure you go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (also near Central Park) - you'll never see it all in one day, but the Impressionist collection is worth the visit.

If you go up the Empire State building (which you should) - go at night. The lines will be long, but it's worth it. Also Top of the Rock (Rockfeller Centre) is awesome.

I could go on and on as NYC is one of my favourite spots in the world. I've been about 10 times and would love to go back. I especially love it in the fall when Central Park is ablaze with fall foliage and there's a nip in the air. But summer is awesome too!!

    Have fun!!

  14. Such a lovely view for lunch! I've only been to NY once and it was a quick trip so I'm afraid I don't have many restaurant suggestions. They are so many great spots and we will look forward to hearing about where you go!
