No Sew Burlap Table Runner

Due to an unfortunate circumstance between my puppy and my sewing machine cord (chewed), I started looking for how to make a pretty burlap table runner, with no sewing involved. I was very happy to find some simple instructions here and it turned out great. It is the perfect soft, yet rustic touch for my Thanksgiving decor.

I used 2 1/2 yards of soft burlap fabric. Step 1 {cut desired width and length - I used an old table runner as a pattern}. Step 2 {pull threads to fray side edges and ends of cut fabric}. Step 3 {iron and use fray guard if needed - mIne seems fine so far}.

I am using this on my kitchen table, but may end up using it on the dining room table, for Thanksgiving. I do have some fabric left over, and may make something different for that table. It will be fun to play with the fabric between now and Thanksgiving and see what looks pretty :-)

I also changed the Halloween decorations for a few Thanksgiving turkeys and signs. This is one of my favorites, because it helps us remember the reason for the holiday.

My weekend was very fun and busy and I am happy to report Melissa and the MSU Pompon team won the Collegiate High Kick Championship for the 6th straight year. I will have some fun photos tomorrow.

Happy Monday!

Remembering Halloween

When my girls were little, the best part of Halloween for me, were always our conversations about what they wanted their costume to be that year. They had definite ideas and because they knew I could sew, they also knew I could make what they imagined. It was fun to go back and look at the costumes I made and to remember their excitement. This Tinkerbell costume was one of my favorites.

Remember the Beanie Babie craze? No sewing involved; just some ears, a tail and a tag around the neck.

A vest with fringe and stars, an easy pull on skirt, a cowboy hat and boots made a cute cowgirl costume.

Sometimes it was the accessories that made the costumes. Curella Deville and a little hippie girl look cool in their sunglasses.

From princesses to Minnie Mouse, to even a Twister board dress and hat; we have had a variety of cute and creative costumes. It was fun, taking an idea from my daughters imagination and coming up with a Halloween costume they were excited to wear.

Have a great Halloween weekend!

Thoughts for Thursday...empty nest, books, etc.

Things I am thinking about today...

  • Since, I have spent the better part of this week helping Melissa get ready to go back to school, I am ready to relax the next couple of days. I plan on drinking a lot of tea, reading and maybe taking a last visit or two to the pool. All the cleaning and organizing I need to do to get my house back in shape, can wait until next week. I need some time to adjust to the quiet - and try not to miss her too much.
  • In case you were wondering; this is what it looks like when you are packing up someone to go off to college. I have to believe that girls have more stuff than boys. The shoes alone could take up the whole trunk of the car. And, then there is make up, jewelry and all the cute decorations for the dorm room. She makes me smile though, because it is all fun and girly and she was so excited :-)
  • I brought out my sewing machine this week for the first time, in a long time, and made curtains for Melissa's dorm room windows. Pretty, simple white on white, with a purple daisy chain trim. I am very glad I learned how to sew when I was a teenager. It takes no time at all to make an easy pair of curtains and they are so much better and nicer than you could purchase. I have found that where I live, the ability to sew has become something of a lost art.
  • This is the next book I plan on reading. I will be starting it this weekend and it is getting really good reviews. The title is The Care and Handling of Roses with Thorns by Margaret Dilloway. It is a story about friendship and about learning to be a good friend to someone, in return. It is also a story about learning to accept help, when it is freely given. I think most of us have no problem helping our friends and family, but it is harder to accept or ask for help when we need it. Do you think most women are like this?
Have a wonderful Thursday :-)

Unique and Easy T Shirt Quilt

When my daughters were in high school, they accumulated so many t-shirts, it was hard to find space in their dresser drawers to hold each and every one. And, because each one was a reminder of a special event, sports team, championship, etc., simply getting rid of them was out of the question. My solution was to make a t-shirt quilt, as a special gift for their high school graduation. I wanted this quilt to be a keepsake, but also something they would be comfortable using everyday.

What makes this quilt unique, is that the t-shirt is not sewn on, nor does it fill the entire quilt square. I cut the part of the t shirt I wanted to use, centered it on the quilt square, placed light batting under it, then trimmed the outside with brightly colored ribbon, using liquid stitch.

If there are small printed areas you like on the t-shirt, you can use several, on one quilt square. This method would also work well in making a quilt with child size t-shirts.

The base of the quilt is 16 pre-cut quilt squares, sewn together. I placed t-shirts on eleven quilt squares, leaving four quilt squares open and put my daughters name on one square. Putting the quilt together was simple; using light batting for the middle and fleece for warmth and coziness on the back. After sewing the sides, I finished the top and bottom with blanket binding. The final step was a small piece of ribbon sewn through all the layers on each corner of the quilt squares.

This quilt was easy and fun to make, and my daughters have a unique keepsake to use and keep forever :-)
